Installation

Before It's Gone is available as a pre-built binary for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Pick your platform below, or see Build from source if you prefer to compile it yourself.

One-line install

The quickest way to install auto-detects your platform and architecture.

Linux & macOS

curl -fsSL https://aetherassembly.org/install.sh | bash

Auto-detects your distro and architecture, then installs via apt, dnf, zypper, rpm, dmg, or AppImage fallback. Run the same command again to update.

Windows (PowerShell)

irm https://aetherassembly.org/install.ps1 | iex

Downloads and launches the NSIS installer. Run the same command again to update.

Manual download

Auto-updates via COPR (recommended)

Add the COPR repository and install; you'll receive updates automatically via dnf upgrade:

sudo dnf copr enable aster1630/before-its-gone
sudo dnf install before-its-gone

Manual .rpm install

# x86_64
sudo dnf install ./before-its-gone-<version>-x86_64.rpm

# aarch64
sudo dnf install ./before-its-gone-<version>-aarch64.rpm

Uninstall

sudo dnf remove before-its-gone

openSUSE (Leap / Tumbleweed)

Compatibility note: The .rpm is built on Fedora and should work on openSUSE Leap and Tumbleweed, but not all versions and configurations are tested. If you hit issues, please report them with your openSUSE version and configuration. To help test, try building from source on openSUSE and report back either way.

Auto-updates via OBS (recommended)

Add the OBS repository and install; you'll receive updates automatically via zypper update:

sudo zypper addrepo https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:aster1630/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/home:aster1630.repo
sudo zypper refresh && sudo zypper install before-its-gone

Manual .rpm install

# x86_64
sudo zypper install ./before-its-gone-<version>-x86_64.rpm

# aarch64
sudo zypper install ./before-its-gone-<version>-aarch64.rpm

Uninstall

sudo zypper remove before-its-gone

Arch Linux (PKGBUILD)

A PKGBUILD is attached to every release on the Releases page. It installs the AppImage and wires it up as a proper system package with a desktop entry, icons, and a /usr/bin launcher.

Install

# Download PKGBUILD from the Releases page, then:
makepkg -si

makepkg -si downloads the AppImage, verifies the checksum, installs it via pacman, and handles any missing dependencies automatically.

Uninstall

sudo pacman -R before-its-gone

Debian / Ubuntu

Compatibility note: The .deb is built and tested on Ubuntu LTS. Most Debian-based derivatives (Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, elementary OS) should work with the .deb package, but aren't officially tested. If you run into issues, please open an issue with your distro and version.

Stable APT repository (recommended)

The signed stable repository supports amd64 and arm64, including 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS. It does not support 32-bit armhf. Stable releases may take up to 12 hours to appear. Beta releases are available directly from GitHub; there is no beta APT channel.

Before continuing after gpg --show-keys, confirm the signing-key fingerprint is 32B72F22E77E21F510B31849A7B44812A39EEB9C. Both applications use this key.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ca-certificates curl gnupg
sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://apt.aetherassembly.org/before-its-gone/apt-repo-public.asc -o /tmp/aetherassembly-apt-public.asc
gpg --show-keys --with-fingerprint /tmp/aetherassembly-apt-public.asc

# Confirm the fingerprint below before continuing.
sudo install -m 0644 /tmp/aetherassembly-apt-public.asc /etc/apt/keyrings/aetherassembly.asc
echo "deb [arch=amd64,arm64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/aetherassembly.asc] https://apt.aetherassembly.org/before-its-gone stable main" \
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/before-its-gone.list >/dev/null
rm /tmp/aetherassembly-apt-public.asc
sudo apt update
sudo apt install before-its-gone

Update later with:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install --only-upgrade before-its-gone

If you configured the old repository, remove its obsolete source entry and any beta entry before adding this source. Keep other applications’ source entries.

Manual .deb install

sudo apt install ./before-its-gone-<version>-amd64.deb
Use apt install ./ rather than dpkg -i; apt automatically resolves any missing dependencies.

Uninstall

sudo apt remove before-its-gone

Raspberry Pi 4 / 5

Compatibility note: Tested on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm (arm64). Earlier Raspberry Pi OS versions and other ARM SBCs running Debian/Ubuntu derivatives may also work, but aren't officially tested. If you run into issues, please open an issue with your OS version and board model.

On 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, follow the stable APT instructions above. For a manual install, download the latest ARM64 Debian package from GitHub Releases:

sudo apt install ./before-its-gone-<version>-arm64.deb

Uninstall

sudo apt remove before-its-gone

Sandbox warning

On Raspberry Pi OS, Electron may log a warning about the SUID sandbox on first launch. The app still runs. To fix it permanently, choose one of:

Option 1: Enable user namespaces system-wide:

echo 'kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone = 1' | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/00-userns.conf
sudo sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/00-userns.conf

Option 2: Set the SUID bit on the sandbox binary only:

sudo chmod 4755 /opt/before-its-gone/chrome-sandbox
The path may vary, find it with dpkg -L before-its-gone | grep sandbox.

macOS

Compatibility note: The .dmg is tested on macOS 27 Dev Beta (Apple Silicon). Earlier macOS versions should work, but aren't regularly tested. If you run into issues, please open an issue with your macOS version and chip.

Install

Download the .dmg from the Releases page, open it, and drag Before It's Gone to your Applications folder.

macOS Gatekeeper ("damaged" warning): The app is not notarized, so macOS may refuse to open it with a "damaged and can't be opened" message, especially on macOS 15 and later. The Privacy & Security bypass no longer works for un-notarized apps. Run this once in Terminal after dragging the app to Applications:
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Before Its Gone.app"
Then open the app normally.

Uninstall

Drag Before It's Gone out of your Applications folder and into the Trash.

Windows

SmartScreen warning: The installer isn't code-signed, so Windows Defender SmartScreen may flag it on first run. Click More info then Run anyway to proceed. You can verify the download against the checksums on the Releases page.

Two options are available from the Releases page:

  • NSIS installer: installs the app system-wide with an uninstaller entry in Add/Remove Programs.
  • Portable .exe runs without installation; data is stored alongside the executable.
The portable version may be buggy and isn't recommended, but it is supported. If you find issues, please open an issue.

Install

Run the NSIS installer (before-its-gone-setup-<version>.exe) and follow the prompts, or use the portable .exe with no installation required.

Uninstall

Go to Settings > Apps and uninstall Before Its Gone from there. The portable version can just be deleted.
